Richardson leads shorthanded Knicks over Wizards
Basketball Betting Lines
11/22/2008 -
New York, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Quentin Richardson scored 34 points and pulled
down 12 rebounds to pace the shorthanded New York Knicks to a 122-117 win over
the Washington Wizards.
Richardson went 7-of-13 from three-point range for the Knicks, who played
with the minimum of eight players for a second straight game because of a pair
of trades they made on Friday. Also, guard Stephon Marbury didn't dress for
the game.
Nate Robinson had a season-high 27 points, Wilson Chandler tallied 23 and
David Lee contributed 22 points and 12 rebounds for the Knicks, who snapped a
three-game skid. Chris Duhon had 10 points and 11 assists.
"A lot of guys had to play 40-plus minutes and that can take a toll on you,
especially with the up-tempo style we played," said Richardson. "Guys were
able to get it out and we made some huge plays down the stretch."
Antawn Jamison scored 29 and pulled down 13 rebounds for the Wizards, who fell
to 1-10 on the season. Caron Butler scored 23, while Nick Young had 17.
"They made some threes, got the momentum back and felt good," said Wizards
coach Eddie Jordan of the Knicks. "It's a unique way to play and a hard to get
a handle on it. We just didn't answer their threes."
In separate deals, the Knicks traded their two leading scorers, forward Zach
Randolph and guard Jamal Crawford, before a 104-87 Friday loss to Milwaukee.
Randolph, who was averaging 20.5 points, was shipped to the Los Angeles Clippers along with reserve guard Mardy Collins for Cuttino Mobley and Tim
Thomas, while Crawford, who averaged 19.6 in New York, was sent to Golden
State for forward Al Harrington. None of the new acquisitions were available
Saturday, but they arrived in New York before the game.
"It's a change of atmosphere all the way around," said Harrington. "Things are
definitely different around here. I've played under Mike (D'Antoni) before.
The atmosphere is definitely going to be fun. You don't have to play like
robots, you get to play to your strengths."
Darius Songaila's layup had the Wizards within 116-113 with just over two
minutes left, but Lee countered with a layup. DeShawn Stevenson missed a
three-pointer at the other end, and Richardson's layup expanded the advantage
to seven.
Young made a pair of free throws, and a Butler putback with 7.8 seconds
remaining made it a three-point game, but Duhon made both at the charity
stripe to seal the victory.
Songaila had 13 points, and Stevenson ended with 10 points and eight assists.
The Knicks led by double digits with under three minutes left in the opening
quarter and settled for a 35-29 edge after 12 minutes. They were ahead 60-58
at the half, but used an 11-4 run to start the third. The Wizards, though,
rallied and got within 91-89 going to the fourth on a Butler three-pointer.
Game Notes
The Knicks shot 16-of-36 from beyond the arc...Robinson made 10-of-14 from the
field...New York has won three straight meetings...This was Richardson's
highest scoring game since Jan. 17, 2007 when he had 35 versus the

“You play to win the game!”
Those are the words of notoriously intense head coach Herman Edwards. Unfortunately, from a bettors’ perspective, most coaches don’t feel that way about the NFL preseason. August is a time to evaluate young players, finalize the depth chart and pray your star players stay healthy.
The trick to making money during the exhibition schedule is identifying coaches – like Edwards – who can’t stand losing even when there's nothing on the line.
The New York Jets betting won 15 of 21 preseason games and went 14-7 against the spread (ATS) during Edwards’s five-year tenure with the club. In his first season as the Kansas City Chiefs field boss, the team improved from 0-4 to 2-2.
Identifying win-a-holics like Edwards is a good start if you plan betting the preseason – even though most say you shouldn’t ... but what the hell do they know anyway?
Here’s a brief rundown of two teams that have a habit of winning during the second-stringers’ season, and another club that has a good chance of exceeding this year.
New York Giants betting lines
Playing in the media hub of North America can be stressful but the press can’t write anything negative about the way Tom Coughlin’s boys play in the preseason. The Giants won and covered all four games last summer, improving their record to 7-1 both straight up (SU) and against the spread over the last two years.
Coughlin has shown he’s not afraid to give his starters more time in the second preseason game than most of his colleagues, no doubt one of the reasons his team has been so dominant.
Dallas Cowboys betting lines
Bettors can count on America’s team early on. The Cowboys are 14-6 both SU and ATS since 2002 in warm-up contests. Former coach Bill Parcells, the coach of the team the last four years, has an intimidating, in-your-face presence – surely a reason Dallas has had so much early success.
The Big Tuna won’t be strolling the sidelines with looks of disgust, but new coach Wade Phillips will be anxious to make a good first impression for owner Jerry Jones.
Dallas plays the Indianapolis Colts and the Denver Broncos before things get serious. They then face the Houston Texans in their third contest (the game starters see most game time) and finish off with the Minnesota Vikings.
Expect a Dallas team able to walk away with another 3-1 preseason record.
Oakland Raiders betting lines
This team scored a league-worst 12 offensive touchdowns last season, so the rookies and veterans each have something to prove. There’s a bounty of first-unit jobs up for grabs and plenty of bodies competing for those slots.
First-time head coach Lane Kiffin will be eager to impress an owner who employs the philosophy, “Just win, baby!”
The 32-year-old Kiffin has to command respect from a locker room full of players older than him. All of these factors should lead to purpose in preseason.
Don’t forget: before playing like a team that belonged in NFL Europe, Oakland went 4-1 (both SU and ATS) in exhibition games.
